Pawel grew up in Boulder, Colorado and has played for Boulder High School, University of Colorado Mamabird, and Denver Johnny Bravo. In 2016, he moved to Chicago to pursue a Ph.D. in Finance from Northwestern University. He has played on the Chicago Machine since 2016. During the 2017-2022 seasons, Janas also played for the Chicago Union before moving to the Los Angeles Aviators. The 2025 season marks his return to the Union. His UFA records include leading the League in assists in each season between 2017 and 2019 and being selected to six All-League teams.

Pawel is an Assistant Professor of Economics at Caltech and a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). He serves as an Elite Athlete representative on the Board of Directors of USA Ultimate.
